I decided to read this book in preparation for YALC as it sounds really interesting and Lauren James is doing a signing. I also thought that the premise of this book sounds familiar and wanted to see what take she took on it.
When I started reading this I thought I knew what was going to happen, but I was pleasantly surprised. The story took turns that I wasn’t expecting from starting out. However, I did predict the ending of the relationship between the characters about halfway through the book, as things weren’t adding up the way they should have.
The characters in this were interesting as they were experiencing things that it is impossible for us to know, yet they were still relatable. We have all felt alone and isolated, even if that is our literal reality in the same way it is for Romy. I liked how James made her accessible through her love of Loch & Ness and how many people her age and older have this same response to things that they love. The other characters were also realistic and 3D, but we don’t get to spend a lot of time with them.
